A woman kept throwing her long hair over my airplane seat and into my food

“YOU TURNED MY EIGHT-HUNDRED-DOLLAR HAIR INTO A KINDERGARTEN CRAFT PROJECT!” At thirty-five thousand feet, a young woman named Brittany stood screaming in the aisle, pink glitter slime tangled in her expensive extensions. She pointed at me, a seventy-three-year-old grandmother, as the entire cabin watched. Two hours earlier, we’d met in duty-free. Brittany had sprayed perfume everywhere, mocked my age, and whipped her knee-length hair into my face. I’d warned her politely. She laughed. Then we boarded the same flight. She sat directly in front of me, filming herself for eleven hundred followers.

Every time she tossed her hair, it landed on my tray, my arm, or my food. When I complained, she smirked. “Maybe you shouldn’t be drinking at your age anyway.” Her hair plunged into my white wine. That was my breaking point.I reached into my bag and pulled out the unusual gift I’d bought for my granddaughter: pink glitter slime. While Brittany kept streaming, I worked a generous handful into the ends of her extensions. Minutes later, she discovered it. “YOU PUT SLIME IN MY HAIR?!” She clawed at the sticky mess, accidentally gluing her phone to her palm.

Her viewers flooded the screen with comments. Some laughed. Others called her out for tormenting an elderly passenger. A flight attendant hurried over, threatening to involve the police. I admitted what I’d done and offered to fix it. With a little olive oil and patience, the slime came free.

Then something unexpected happened. Brittany confessed she’d spent nearly everything she had that month trying to look perfect online. At twenty-eight, she already felt old. I told her she didn’t need eight hundred dollars of extensions to prove she was beautiful. I braided her hair, apologized for the slime, and accepted her apology for the way she’d treated me. She even returned the hundred-dollar bill she’d picked up from the floor, assuming it was hers. When we landed, the police were no longer needed. My granddaughter would get a check instead. We’d shop for her gift together that weekend. And Harold, the gentleman beside me, had one final question: “Would you like to get coffee?” I smiled. “Only if you promise to keep your hair to yourself.”
