I stole a married man from his wife and three kids

The letter arrived twenty-five years after we brought our daughter home, reopening a chapter we thought we understood. My husband, Thomas, and I had watched Lily overcome rejection and build a promising future in medicine. Now, a message from her biological mother was asking us to reconsider the circumstances that had shaped her beginnings. We had met Lily after years of infertility left us longing for a child. She was five years old, living in a children’s home, and often overlooked because of a large birthmark on her face. When we first met her, she asked permission for almost everything, as though love and belonging were privileges she could easily lose.

Thomas and I promised her a home where she would never have to earn our affection. We were honest about her adoption, answering her questions as she grew. School brought painful teasing, but gradually Lily became more confident. Eventually, she pursued medicine, determined to help others feel accepted regardless of their appearance. Then the letter arrived. Her biological mother explained that fear and pressure, rather than a lack of love, had influenced the decision to give her up. Reading those words was difficult because they revealed another side to a story we had understood only through the circumstances of Lily’s adoption.

Lily eventually met her biological mother. Their reunion was emotional and complicated, bringing questions, difficult feelings, and an opportunity to understand the past more clearly. The meeting could not restore the years they had spent apart, but it offered Lily something important: a fuller understanding of where her life had begun. As I watched Lily process the revelations, I remembered the little girl who had once been afraid to ask for anything. We had spent years reassuring her that she belonged with us, and those promises had never depended on what we knew about her biological family. Still, I realized that knowing the truth about her beginnings could help her understand herself in ways our love alone could not.

Thomas and I remained her parents. The memories we shared, the challenges we had overcome together, and the life we had built as a family were not diminished by another person’s place in Lily’s history. Love did not require us to erase the past or pretend it had never been painful. In the end, the letter did not take our daughter away from us. It helped her discover a missing part of herself. We had given Lily a home where she could feel safe and loved, and now we could support her as she explored the story that came before it. Our family’s history had become more complicated, but our love had room for the truth.
