Nearly three decades after Princess Diana’s death, photographs of the late royal continue to attract public interest. One famous image of Diana with King Charles has generated particular curiosity because their apparent height difference seems much greater than expected. Diana was 36 when she died in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997, about a year after her divorce from Charles was finalized. However, the Balmoral photograph has a straightforward detail that can easily be overlooked: Diana was sitting on a bench. Her seated position naturally makes Charles appear much taller in that particular image.

Camera angles, perspective, posture, footwear, and whether someone is standing or sitting can all change how relative proportions appear. Other photographs provide a better comparison of Diana and Charles standing together. What initially seems like a mysterious difference therefore has a simple explanation in this image: Diana’s position on the bench creates the dramatic visual effect, showing why a single photograph may not tell the whole story.
