The Ultimate Guide to Fresh Sheets: How Often You Should Really Wash Your Bedding for Cleaner Sleep and Healthier Skin

For most people, washing bed sheets about once a week is a good routine. After several nights, sheets collect sweat, body oils, dead skin cells, dust, and allergens that can affect comfort and hygiene. However, some situations require more frequent washing. If you sweat heavily, sleep with pets, eat in bed, have allergies or asthma, live with eczema, or are recovering from an illness, washing your sheets every three to four days may be better. If you shower before bed, sleep alone, keep pets away from the bed, and maintain a clean bedroom, weekly washing is generally enough.

Keeping bedding clean involves more than sheets. Pillowcases should be washed every three to seven days, especially for people with oily skin or allergies. Blankets generally need cleaning every two to four weeks, while duvet covers should be washed every one to two weeks. Comforters and duvets protected by covers usually need washing every two to three months. Washable pillows can be cleaned every four to six months, while mattress protectors should be washed every one to two months, or sooner after spills or accidents.

Simple habits can help bedding remain cleaner between washes. Showering before bed, removing makeup, avoiding food in the bedroom, and allowing the bed to air out each morning can reduce dirt and moisture. Keeping pets away from the mattress and occasionally vacuuming it can also help. These practices may reduce dust mites, pollen, pet dander, bacteria, and unpleasant odors.

Always follow the care instructions on bedding labels, including the recommended water temperature, and make sure everything is completely dry before making the bed. For most households, washing sheets once a week provides a practical balance between cleanliness, comfort, and convenience, while personal habits and circumstances can determine whether more frequent cleaning is necessary.
