That message sounded less like an angry complaint and more like a threat. We could not determine whether it was another device or something unrelated, but we realized we could no longer assume we were safe. We abandoned our original route, changed our plans, and checked into a hotel elsewhere in the city.

The following morning, we contacted police and provided the camera, photographs, and threatening message. The investigation moved slowly, but officers agreed to examine the evidence. Lying beside my wife that night, I kept thinking about how easily we had trusted the beautiful listing, positive reviews, and verified host badge. A locked door does not always guarantee privacy.
