Which Side of the Fence Should Face Your Neighbor? What I Learned Before Building Mine

When I finally marked the line for my new backyard fence, I thought the hardest part was behind me. Then one simple question created an unexpected dilemma: Which side should face my neighbor? Suddenly, what seemed like common sense became a matter of courtesy, local rules, neighborhood expectations, and maintaining a good relationship. A small decision about fence orientation could potentially create unnecessary tension between two adjoining properties.

As I looked into the issue, I discovered there is no single universal rule requiring one particular side of a fence to face the neighboring property. The common belief that the more attractive, finished side must always face outward is often a matter of tradition or courtesy rather than a general legal requirement. However, the answer can vary depending on local building codes, homeowners association rules, and the precise location of the property boundary.

That meant the first step was not choosing the most attractive orientation, but understanding the rules that actually applied to my property. I checked the plat map, reviewed local regulations, and considered any neighborhood requirements before making a final decision. These details mattered because placing a fence incorrectly could create practical or legal complications later.

In the end, I realized that the most valuable tools were not my post-hole digger or level, but accurate information and a respectful conversation with my neighbor. The fence might stand for decades, while the relationship next door could last even longer. Building it thoughtfully meant balancing appearance, privacy, practicality, and courtesy while following the rules that genuinely applied where I lived.
