On the morning my former husband Ryan married my younger sister Lina, my nine-year-old daughter Amelia asked whether Lina would still be her aunt and whether I would still be her sister. Ryan and I had spent thirteen years together raising four children, but everything changed after I discovered their relationship. I ended the marriage because my trust was broken, while trying to protect our children from the adults’ choices. When Ryan and Lina announced their wedding, I chose not to attend, although I allowed Amelia to go because she wanted to support her father.

During the wedding, Amelia became upset during a unity-candle ceremony. When told that everyone was becoming one family, she asked, “Where do I belong?” Then she asked why Lina had not supported her mother if family was supposed to support family. No one had an easy answer. Ryan tried to comfort her, but Amelia admitted she was angry because he had never asked how she truly felt about everything that had changed.

When I arrived, Amelia ran to me crying and worried she had ruined her father’s special day. I told her that expressing difficult feelings did not make her responsible for adult decisions. She returned inside briefly, picked up her candle, and told Ryan she loved him but was not ready to pretend everything felt normal. She then chose to leave with me, saying, “Mom came because I needed her. Isn’t that what supporting family means?”

That evening, Amelia placed her unlit candle on our windowsill. Later, Ryan apologized for not considering how his decisions affected the children. Around our kitchen table, my children laughed together, reminding me that although our family had changed, it still existed. Families may change, but children deserve to ask questions, express emotions, and know they never have to choose sides.
