My Neighbor Kept Borrowing My Appliances—Then One Returned in Unexpected Condition

For years, my neighbor Denise borrowed things from me and rarely returned them in good condition. Ladders, coolers, kitchen appliances, and other household items often came back late, dirty, scratched, or damaged. I usually ignored it because we had been neighbors for six years and our families had always gotten along. Everything changed when Denise asked to borrow my mother’s old KitchenAid mixer, a sentimental possession she had bought decades earlier. Although I initially hesitated, I eventually agreed.

When Denise returned the mixer, it was covered in dried frosting and no longer worked. She admitted it had started making a strange noise but said she kept using it because she needed to finish a cake. A repair technician determined that the motor had been overloaded, and the repair would cost $347. Denise refused to pay, arguing that the mixer was already old and that I should replace it. Rather than turning the situation into a bigger argument, I decided it was time to establish clear boundaries.

When Denise later asked to borrow several items for a family celebration, I created a simple lending agreement listing each item, its condition, return deadline, and a refundable $350 deposit. She initially thought the idea was ridiculous, but when she urgently needed my tables, she agreed to the terms. This time, everything was returned clean, dry, and on time, so I returned her deposit.

Denise eventually apologized for how she had treated my belongings. When my repaired mixer finally came home, I realized that setting boundaries does not mean being unkind. It simply means making responsibility clear. From then on, Denise became much more respectful, and our relationship improved. I learned that sometimes a simple boundary can protect both your possessions and your relationships.
