Dolly Parton Dies at 80—Then Trump Orders a Rare National Tribute as Obama, Oprah and Jane Fonda Speak Out

Within hours of Dolly Parton’s reported death at 80, tributes spread far beyond Nashville. Former presidents, Hollywood stars, country singers, governors, senators, and longtime friends remembered a woman whose appeal crossed political and cultural boundaries. President Donald Trump announced that American flags would be lowered to half-staff across federal buildings, military installations, U.S. territories, and diplomatic facilities abroad through September 1, 2026. Parton had long avoided being identified with a particular political side, making the national response especially notable.

Her nephew announced her death on August 25, 2026, following months of health problems and fewer public appearances. She had postponed and later canceled planned Las Vegas performances while undergoing medical treatment. Her husband, Carl Dean, had also died in March 2025.Tributes emphasized that Parton’s influence extended far beyond music.

Trump praised her career, while former presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush highlighted her achievements in music, business, literacy, and philanthropy. Jane Fonda remembered their friendship and shared work on 9 to 5, Oprah Winfrey reflected on Parton’s remarkable journey, and Billy Ray Cyrus recalled their long friendship and her heartfelt affection.

Born in Tennessee in 1946 as one of 12 children, Parton began writing songs young and eventually became a global star through hits including “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You.” She also helped build Dollywood and created the Imagination Library, which distributed more than 200 million books. Her broad legacy allowed people from very different backgrounds to feel connected to her story.
