A late-night visit to the bathroom surprised one homeowner when a loud noise near the light revealed a large flying insect moving around the room. At first, the insect appeared unusual and unsettling, leading to concerns about pests or household problems. After a closer look, however, the insect was identified as a cockchafer, also known as a May bug, a seasonal beetle commonly seen during warmer months.

Although its size and noisy flight can seem intimidating, the cockchafer is generally harmless to people and pets. The insect does not sting, bite, or pose a direct threat inside the home. Experts explain that these beetles are often attracted to bright indoor lighting and may accidentally enter houses through open windows, doors, or ventilation areas during their short active season.

Cockchafers are nocturnal insects that usually appear in late spring and early summer. During this period, they become more active in the evening while searching for mates and navigating toward light sources. Their clumsy flying style and buzzing sound can make encounters seem alarming, but they are typically temporary visitors rather than signs of a household infestation or sanitation issue.

Specialists recommend remaining calm if one enters the home. In many cases, turning off indoor lights and opening a nearby window allows the insect to find its way back outside naturally. If needed, it can be carefully guided into a container and released outdoors near trees or vegetation. Environmental experts also note that cockchafers play a role in local ecosystems, contributing to soil health and serving as a food source for birds and other wildlife.
