What Looked Like Something Sinister Was Something We Left Behind

I was walking along the beach expecting nothing more than the usual—shells, driftwood, the quiet rhythm of the tide—when I noticed something that stopped me in place. It didn’t look like debris at first. The shape, the texture, the way it seemed to have layers beneath the surface—it all felt unsettling, almost lifelike. For a moment, it was easy to assume the worst.

But as I got closer, the illusion began to fade. What I had found wasn’t anything biological. It was an old industrial cable, likely from marine or submarine use, worn down by years of exposure to saltwater, sunlight, and shifting sand. The outer coating had split open, revealing internal materials—fabric-like fibers, mesh, and insulation—that created an uncanny resemblance to something organic.

The fear passed, but it left behind a different kind of realization. This wasn’t a rare object—it was a reminder of how much human-made material ends up in natural spaces. Objects like this can travel long distances underwater before eventually resurfacing, blending into environments where they don’t belong.

Since that moment, I’ve found myself looking at the shoreline differently. Not just for what might be unusual or unexpected, but for what it represents. Sometimes, what appears mysterious is simply a reflection of what we’ve left behind—and noticing it is the first step toward understanding the impact we have on the world around us.
