Lionel Richie Lit Up the St. Louis Stage in Bright Yellow — Hours Later, He Was in Intensive Care

Under the lights at The Muny, 77-year-old Lionel Richie appeared every bit the experienced showman. Wearing a bright yellow jacket, he smiled into the microphone, moved across the stage, performed beneath bursts of light and pyrotechnics, and later sat at the piano. The St. Louis audience responded warmly to songs that have been part of their lives for decades. Near the end, Richie changed into a red jacket and began “All Night Long” standing before eventually sitting in a chair brought onto the stage.

The August 29, 2026, performance followed a busy summer during which Richie toured the United States and Canada with Earth, Wind & Fire on the “Sing a Song All Night Long” tour. His St. Louis set covered nearly five decades of music, including songs from his Commodores years and his successful solo career. Audience members praised his energy, humor and connection with the crowd. However, footage from the final song later drew attention when Richie appeared to signal toward the side of the stage before a crew member brought him a chair.

According to reports, Richie checked himself into a St. Louis hospital afterward for testing and was admitted to intensive care, with doctors reportedly investigating possible mild dehydration. Fans also remembered an earlier incident in St. Paul, Minnesota, where Richie became dizzy during “Dancing on the Ceiling,” sat down and ultimately left the stage. Paramedics later took him to a hospital for precautionary evaluation. Although these episodes occurred within just over two months, no confirmed diagnosis or common medical cause was reported.

The two incidents understandably concerned longtime fans, but the available information does not establish that they were connected. Dehydration, fatigue, heat, medication effects and various medical conditions can cause dizziness or weakness, particularly in older adults, but only possible mild dehydration was specifically mentioned in reports. What remains clear is that Richie continued performing actively throughout 2026. The St. Louis images therefore carry a deeper emotional meaning: even while pausing onstage, he continued singing, connected with his audience and eventually stood to say goodbye. For fans, the evening became a reminder that even legendary performers must sometimes listen to their bodies.
