Tragedy at Youth Hockey Game Shakes Pawtucket Community

What began as a routine afternoon of youth hockey turned into a devastating

scene inside Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket. Just before 3 p.m. on Monday,

February 16, 2026, gunfire erupted during a game, sending families and players

scrambling for safety. Witnesses initially mistook the sharp sounds for

something harmless, but panic quickly spread through the stands.

By the time law enforcement secured the building, three individuals

— including a child — had lost their lives, and several others were reported critically injured.

Police responded rapidly, evacuating athletes, parents, and arena staff.

Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves confirmed that the suspected shooter

died from what investigators believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Authorities stated that officers did not discharge their weapons during the incident.

Early statements suggested the shooting appeared targeted and may have stemmed

from a family-related dispute. Roads surrounding the arena

were temporarily closed as emergency crews worked the scene and reunification plans were organized for families.

As the investigation continued, additional details added to the emotional

weight of the tragedy. The suspect was identified by officials as Robert Dorgan,

who also used the name Roberta Esposito. Local reporting referenced prior legal

disputes involving family members, though several past charges had reportedly

been dismissed. Advocacy organizations addressing domestic violence noted

that unresolved family conflicts can have far-reaching consequences,

affecting not only relatives but entire communities when situations escalate into violence.

City leaders and school officials focused on ensuring that student-athletes

present at the game were accounted for and safely returned home.

Pawtucket Mayor Don Grebien described the event as deeply heartbreaking,

emphasizing that what should have been a joyful gathering ended in profound loss.

As investigators continue reviewing evidence and speaking with witnesses,

the community remains united in grief. A space once known

for teamwork and celebration now carries the weight of an event that will long be remembered in the city’s history.
