What a Hole in a Tomato Can Tell You About Your Garden

Finding a hole in a ripe tomato can be frustrating, especially after spending time caring for a garden. However, a damaged tomato does not necessarily mean that the entire harvest is in trouble. The hole may simply provide a clue about what is happening in the garden and which type of visitor may have reached the fruit.

Several common garden pests and animals can damage tomatoes. Tomato fruitworms may leave openings near the stem, while hornworms can feed on both tomatoes and leaves.Birds may also peck at ripe fruit, while slugs and snails can leave irregular damage and visible trails. In many cases, the damage is limited to individual fruits rather than affecting the entire garden.

The best approach is to inspect the plant carefully before deciding there is a larger problem. Removing damaged portions of fruit can sometimes allow the unaffected part to be used, while checking nearby plants can help identify the source of the damage. Gardeners can also manually remove visible pests, keep garden beds tidy, and use suitable companion plants as part of a broader garden-care routine.

A damaged tomato can therefore be viewed as useful information rather than a sign that the harvest has failed. By observing the plants carefully and responding to problems early, gardeners can protect their crops without unnecessary worry. Sometimes, an imperfect piece of fruit is simply a reminder that healthy gardens require observation, patience, and regular care.
