What You Should Not Plug Into a Power Strip: Safety Risks Explained by Experts

As colder temperatures arrive across the United States, many households turn to space heaters for additional warmth and comfort during the winter season. These devices are popular because they are portable, affordable, and effective for heating smaller areas. However, safety experts emphasize that improper use can create serious risks, making it important to follow basic safety guidelines while using them at home.

One of the most important safety recommendations is to avoid plugging a space heater into a power strip or extension cord. According to safety authorities such as the National Fire Protection Association, space heaters should always be connected directly to a wall outlet. Power strips and extension cords are not designed to handle the high electrical load required by these devices, and using them incorrectly can lead to overheating and increase the risk of electrical fires.

Proper placement of a space heater is also essential for safe use. The unit should always be positioned on a stable, flat surface where it cannot easily tip over. It is recommended to keep at least three feet of clear space around the heater, ensuring that curtains, furniture, bedding, and other flammable materials are kept at a safe distance. This helps reduce the risk of accidental contact with heat sources.

Experts also advise that space heaters should never be left running unattended. They should be turned off when leaving a room or going to sleep, even if the device includes automatic shut-off features. In addition, homeowners are encouraged to regularly check smoke alarms and inspect electrical cords for any signs of damage. Following these precautions helps reduce potential hazards and supports safer use of space heaters during colder months.
