Why Ribbons on Luggage Can Backfire—and What to Do Instead

Waiting at baggage claim while identical suitcases circle endlessly is a familiar frustration. It’s no surprise that many travelers try to make their bags stand out with bright ribbons or scarves tied to the handle. At first glance, it seems like a simple fix—but in today’s highly automated airport systems, that small addition can create unexpected issues.

The first thing to understand is how modern baggage handling works. Airports rely on conveyor belts and scanning systems designed for smooth, compact luggage. Loose items like ribbons can get caught in machinery, leading to torn fabric, damaged bags, or even temporary disruptions in the system. In busy travel hubs, even a minor snag can slow things down more than you might expect.

There’s also a less obvious problem: scanning accuracy. Each bag is tracked using a barcode on its luggage tag, and anything that partially blocks or interferes with that code can cause a misread. If the system can’t scan it properly, the bag may be diverted for manual inspection. That extra step can delay your luggage—especially if you’re catching a connecting flight or arriving during peak travel times.

A better approach is to keep things visible but streamlined. Choose luggage with distinctive colors or patterns, or add flat, secure identifiers like stickers or snug handle wraps that won’t dangle. These options help you spot your bag quickly without interfering with airport equipment. In the end, the simplest solution is often the most reliable—keeping your luggage easy to identify while ensuring it moves smoothly through the system.
