Why We Love Funeral Sandwiches and How Exactly They Got Their Name

Funeral sandwiches are warm, buttery ham-and-cheese sliders that are popular at family gatherings, potlucks, holiday parties, and casual dinners. Made with soft rolls, savory ham, melted cheese, and a seasoned butter topping, they are easy to prepare and serve to a crowd. Although their name sounds unusual, these sandwiches are simply a comforting dish meant to be shared. The name comes from the tradition of bringing food to grieving families after a funeral. In parts of the American South and Midwest, friends, relatives, neighbors, and church members often prepare meals to support families during difficult times. Funeral sandwiches became popular because they are inexpensive, easy to transport, and simple to make in large batches. Over time, they also became a favorite for celebrations and everyday meals.

Making funeral sandwiches at home requires just a few basic ingredients: 12 soft dinner rolls, 12 slices of ham, six slices of Swiss cheese, half a cup of melted butter, one tablespoon each of Dijon mustard and Worcestershire sauce, and a teaspoon each of garlic powder and onion powder. Poppy seeds and mayonnaise are optional. Slice the rolls horizontally, layer the ham and cheese inside, and place the tops back on. Mix the melted butter with the seasonings, then brush the mixture over the rolls.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 10–15 minutes, until the cheese begins to melt. Remove the foil and bake for another five minutes, allowing the tops to become lightly golden. Let the sandwiches rest briefly before serving them warm. For the best results, avoid adding too much butter, choose a cheese that melts well, and keep the rolls connected while assembling them.

One reason these sandwiches remain popular is their versatility. You can replace ham with turkey or roast beef, try cheddar or provolone instead of Swiss, or add herbs and spices for extra flavor. Serve them with salad, coleslaw, potato chips, pickles, or soup for a complete meal. Leftovers can be refrigerated for three to four days, while unbaked sandwiches can be frozen for later. Whether served at a family dinner or a gathering with friends, funeral sandwiches offer a simple, satisfying way to bring people together.
