My Son Sold My Buick for $4,200 on My 76th Birthday “For My Own Good” So I Bought a $389 Three-Wheeled Bicycle and Rode It to His Office

My son held out his hand across my birthday cake. “Mom, I need the keys.”We were at a supper club in Wisconsin, celebrating my seventy-sixth birthday. My son, Brian, told me he’d sold my Buick because I’d accidentally clipped a neighbor’s mailbox. He handed me a cashier’s check for $4,200 and said it was for my own good. The Buick was a 2005 LeSabre my late husband, Walter, had chosen himself. I’d driven it for eleven years. Brian had his name on the title, too, and I’d trusted him to protect me after his father died. Instead, he’d decided I was no longer capable of driving.

I handed over the keys without arguing. That night, I called my friend Wilma and asked her to take me to the bicycle shop the next morning.I bought a bright red three-wheeled bicycle with a basket and a little chrome bell. Then I rode it two miles into town, straight to Brian’s insurance office. When he saw me through the window, his face went pale.“Did you ask my doctor if I was safe to drive?” I asked him. “Did you ask my eye doctor? Did you even ride with me once?”

He had no answer.Over the next few weeks, I visited my doctor, my eye specialist, and a driving instructor. All three confirmed I was capable of driving safely. I put their reports in a folder and brought it to Brian’s office. That’s when he finally broke down and confessed the truth. Eleven years earlier, he’d watched his father lose control of a car on an icy road. Walter died in the crash, and Brian had carried the guilt ever since. When I mentioned the mailbox accident, his old terror returned.

I held his hand and told him his father’s death wasn’t his fault. But fear didn’t give him the right to take away my independence.Brian bought me another car, titled solely in my name. Then I made him join our Wednesday cycling group, where he learned what it meant to trust me again. Now I drive when I choose and ride my red tricycle when I please. And whenever I pass Brian’s office, I ring my bell once. Every time, he looks up and waves.
