A 16-Year-Old Boy’s Weekend Sleepovers Hid a Secret Until His Friend’s Mother Called

When Denise called asking when her son Cole would return home, the narrator realized that her sixteen-year-old son, Nathan, had been lying about his whereabouts. For eight weekends, both boys had claimed to be staying at each other’s houses, leaving their families unaware of their actual location. Neither boy answered his phone, so the worried parents contacted friends, searched familiar places, and eventually called the police. While searching Nathan’s bedroom, the narrator discovered a receipt for sandpaper, wood glue, and paintbrushes, connecting it to his recent questions about his late father’s belongings. At four in the morning, Michael’s father, Frank, called to confirm that both boys were safe at his workshop. Frank had promised Nathan secrecy without realizing the boys were deceiving their parents.

When Nathan returned home, the narrator noticed he was wearing Michael’s old work jacket, and the resemblance overwhelmed her. Nathan explained that Frank was selling the family house, and he wanted to finish something his father had started before Nathan was born. The unfinished project was a wooden rocking chair. Nathan wanted to complete it before the workshop disappeared, and Cole had helped him sand the wood while Frank taught them to repair the joints. Nathan admitted he had been afraid to ask his mother for help because whenever he mentioned his father, she seemed too busy. His words deeply hurt the narrator, who had spent three years burying herself in work to avoid the grief of losing Michael. She realized that her attempts to protect them from painful memories had left her son feeling alone.

The following afternoon, the narrator visited Frank’s workshop and saw the nearly completed chair, its curved arms polished smooth. She accepted Frank’s apology for keeping the project secret but stressed that the boys’ safety should have come first. She also made clear to Nathan that eight weekends of dishonesty would have consequences. At the same time, she apologized for making him feel that talking about his father was a burden.Together, they opened a box of Michael’s belongings and discovered a sketch of the rocking chair. Across the bottom, Michael had written, “For our little boy.”

Nathan traced the words while his mother shared memories of how excited Michael had been about building the chair and how carefully he had worked on its design.Three weeks later, the finished rocking chair stood in their living room. Nathan sometimes sat in it while his mother shared more stories about Michael, and together they learned to laugh, cry, and remember without avoiding their grief. Nathan began communicating more honestly about his plans, while his mother made room for conversations she had once pushed aside. Although Michael remained gone, remembering him together helped mother and son reconnect and begin healing.
