Unlocking the Mystery Object: The Classic Rubber Squeeze Coin Purse

At first glance, this seamless bright-red oval object looks like a mystery. It might be mistaken for an earbud case, vintage makeup compact, fidget toy, or lens holder. In reality, it is a vintage rubber squeeze coin purse, historically known as a Quikey or Oval Squeeze Purse. Its clever design relies on simple physics rather than mechanical fasteners. There are no zippers, snaps, buttons, or Velcro. Instead, a narrow slit runs along the center of the flexible rubber or vinyl body, remaining tightly closed when the purse is at rest.

To open it, the user simply squeezes both narrow ends with one hand. This pressure causes the flexible walls to arch outward, making the central slit widen. Coins or other small objects can then be accessed quickly and easily. When the pressure is released, the material naturally returns to its original shape. The slit closes again, creating a simple self-sealing mechanism. This combination of flexibility, simplicity, and convenience made the design remarkably practical for everyday use.

Squeeze coin purses became especially popular from the 1950s through the 1980s in North America and Europe. They were particularly useful when coins were essential for public telephones, buses, parking meters, vending machines, and laundromats. They also became popular promotional products. Banks, gas stations, insurance companies, hardware stores, and other businesses often printed their names, logos, addresses, or telephone numbers on them and distributed them as inexpensive advertising giveaways.

Although digital payments have reduced the need for carrying loose change, these purses remain useful. They can hold coins, tokens, guitar picks, small hardware, earbuds, cables, keys, or other tiny everyday items that might otherwise become lost or tangled.Today, vintage squeeze purses are appreciated not only for their practicality but also for their nostalgic design. Their bright colors, advertising graphics, and ingenious opening mechanism capture a period when simple objects were often designed to be durable, functional, and delightfully clever.
