Hospice nurses reveal the one word they often hear just 24 hours before someone dies

Hospice workers see what most of us only face once: the quiet, unguarded moments when a life is letting go. Again and again, they hear the same soft word fall from trembling lips—“Mum.” Even people in their nineties, whose mothers died half a century ago, reach out to someone no one else in the room can see.

Neurobiology may explain part of it: the oldest, deepest layers of the brain hold the first face that soothed us, the first voice that told us we were safe. As the rest of the mind fades, that imprint glows brightest.

For families, it can be frightening or confusing. Neal K. Shah urges a gentler response: don’t correct, don’t drag them back to loss.

Instead, join them in that safe place—“I’m so glad she’s here with you.” In that moment, simply being there is sacred work, a final act of love no one else can offer.
