I Bought 33 Porcelain Frogs at a Garage Sale for My Daughter s 8th Birthday

Three months after Daniel left her for his secretary, the narrator and her eight-year-old daughter Amy are living in a motel. Daniel emptied their joint account, changed the house locks, and allowed her to retrieve only what he considered “personal necessities.” With almost no money left, she spends her final $10 at a garage sale on thirty-three porcelain frogs because Amy has always loved The Frog Prince. The elderly woman selling the frogs introduces herself as Martha and becomes interested when the narrator mentions she grew up near Pine Street. Martha seems to recognize her but says little. The next day, Amy receives the frogs and happily creates a “frog kingdom” on their tiny motel table. One small frog breaks accidentally, revealing an old photograph of the narrator at age eight.

Written on the back of the photograph is a message from her late father: “For whenever you need somewhere to begin again.” Beneath it, Martha has added, “Now follow the map.” Inside the largest frog, the narrator finds a brass key, a hand-drawn map, and another photograph showing herself with her father beside a cabin. The narrator and Amy follow the map to a small cabin near a lake. The brass key opens the door, revealing photographs and belongings from the narrator’s childhood. A search through the property records shows something astonishing: the cabin’s deed was recorded in the narrator’s name when she was eight years old, and the taxes have remained current.

The tax account is connected to Martha, who turns out to be the narrator’s father’s cousin. Martha explains that her father had left her the key, photographs, and documents, asking her to protect the cabin and make sure his daughter received them if he died before explaining everything himself. She had spent years trying to locate the narrator while continuing to pay the taxes.Martha also reveals that the frog treasure hunt was deliberately created for the narrator. Her father had kept the frogs at the cabin, knowing how much his daughter loved the fairy tale. When Martha saw the narrator arrive at the garage sale with her own eight-year-old daughter, she realized the moment had finally come to guide her back to the place her father had prepared for her.

The discovery becomes even more important when the narrator learns Daniel is using her motel situation against her in a custody dispute, arguing that Amy should spend most school nights with him because her mother lacks stable housing. Her lawyer presents the cabin’s deed, working utilities, and financial records showing Daniel emptied their account and locked them out. The judge allows Amy to remain with her mother and orders Daniel to return some of the money. The narrator and Amy move into the cabin and begin rebuilding their lives. They repair the porch and windows, while Amy chooses frog-green paint for her bedroom. Thirty-one frogs sit above the fireplace, while the broken crowned frog is carefully glued back together. When Amy is asked whether it should be replaced, she refuses, smiling as she touches its cracked crown: “It still gets to be the king.”
