“You need to come in immediately,” Principal Brennan said. My cereal bowl slipped from my hand and cracked against the sink. Six men from the plant where my late husband Jonathan had worked had arrived asking for my twelve-year-old daughter, Letty. I made it clear that Letty should not become a symbol of kindness while adults ignored the behavior that made her gesture necessary. The school began investigating, contacting parents, and restricting the students involved while gathering statements. Later, Marcus read Jonathan’s note about remembering how others showed up for his daughters. That evening, I invited Millie and her mother to dinner. Jonathan was gone, but his kindness remained through his coworkers, Millie, and Letty, who saw someone hurting and chose to help.
