Former Broadway Performer Imani Dia Smith Remembered After Tragic Death

The theater community is mourning the loss of Imani Dia Smith, a former Broadway performer whose death has shocked colleagues, friends, and fans. Smith was found unresponsive at a residence in Edison, New Jersey, following an incident on Sunday. Emergency responders transported her to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Authorities say what initially appeared to be a medical emergency soon became the focus of a criminal investigation.

Law enforcement officials have confirmed that the case is being treated as a homicide. Smith’s boyfriend, Jordan D. Jackson-Small, has been taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder, along with additional charges related to child welfare and unlawful possession of a weapon. Investigators say the case remains active, and further details have not yet been released while the inquiry continues.

Smith first gained recognition as a child performer when she appeared as Young Nala in Disney’s The Lion King on Broadway from 2011 to 2012. Her role in the long-running production highlighted her vocal talent and stage presence at an early age. Friends and former colleagues have described her as creative, passionate about the arts, and dedicated to her work in performance.

In the wake of her death, Smith’s family has organized a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses, counseling support, and other needs during this difficult time. In their message to supporters, they described her as vibrant, caring, and deeply devoted to her young son. As tributes continue to emerge from the theater community, many remember her not only for her early success on stage but also for the warmth and energy she brought to those around her.
