Authorities Detain Man Linked to Messages Sent During Nancy Guthrie Case

A disturbing set of messages has added another layer of pain and confusion to the

ongoing search for 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, whose disappearance in Arizona has drawn

national attention. Court records show that a California man, identified as Derrick Callella,

was arrested after allegedly sending messages to members of the Guthrie family referencing

cryptocurrency payments at a time when they were desperately seeking

information about Nancy’s whereabouts. The timing, authorities say, made the messages especially distressing.

According to prosecutors, the communications surfaced shortly after the family

made public appeals for help. One message reportedly asked whether a payment had been received,

raising fears that it could be a ransom demand. Investigators also say a brief

phone call was placed to another family member, further heightening concern during an already fragile moment.

Law enforcement later determined that the messages were not connected to Nancy Guthrie’s

disappearance. Authorities say Callella admitted he had been following news coverage

of the case and located family contact information online. He allegedly told

investigators he sent the messages simply to see if anyone would respond, not because he had any real information.

Federal prosecutors have charged Callella with crimes related to transmitting

communications involving ransom demands. Officials emphasized, however,

that his actions appear unrelated to a separate message sent earlier to a media outlet demanding money for Nancy’s release, which remains under investigation.

Authorities continue to warn the public about the damage caused by hoaxes and misinformation.

False claims, they say, divert resources, intensify emotional trauma for families, and complicate efforts to identify legitimate leads in missing-person cases.

The search for Nancy Guthrie remains active. Investigators believe she did not leave

her home voluntarily and continue reviewing evidence and tips from the community.

Her family, including her daughter Savannah Guthrie, has asked for prayers, patience,

and credible information. Law enforcement stresses that cooperation and verified facts remain critical as a family waits for answers.
